Adam Lambert: Culture Shock to Flashpoint?

Daily Planet 11/29/09 12:00PM ET by Q3

On Sunday November 22, 2009, Adam Lambert, ABC-TV and Dick Clark Productions promised a “shocking” performance with “pyrotechnics”. I was surprised that there was very little actual pyro used in the performance, but the performance was undoubtedly packed with explosive content. Adam surprised his fans, detractors, casual viewers and bystanders with what is not the most famous – perhaps infamous – AMA performance.

One week later - after over 10,000 news reports, perhaps over 1 million online comments, and even more water-cooler and dinner-table conversation, the dust is starting to settle. The result in the short term is that Adam’s album is selling well and will be one of the top new artist debuts this year, and Adam demonstrated that he is more that a “shock artist” by following up his AMA performance with two more traditional network TV performances. But Adam also started an international dialogue on a scale that I do not believe he ever imagined. So what happens now?

Culture Shock

The term, culture shock, was introduced for the first time in 1958 to describe the anxiety produced when a person moves to a completely new environment. This term expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appropriate or inappropriate. The term “Culture Shock” has evolved over the past 50 years to describe the anxiety and feelings of surprise, disorientation, uncertainty and confusion people feel when they are exposed to a different and unknown cultural or social environment. The Culture Shock process can be used to understand the difficulties in assimilating new cultural influences, the difficulty in knowing what is appropriate and what is not, and the dislike for or even disgust (moral or aesthetical) with certain aspects of a new or different culture.
Culture Shock often consists of distinct phases:

• The Honeymoon: In this first stage, you feel euphoric and are pleased by all of the new things encountered – everything encountered is new and exciting.

• Negotiation: After some time, differences between the old and new culture become apparent and may create anxiety. You may feel discontent, impatience, anger, sadness, and even incompetence.

• Adjustment and Acculturation: You start to gain some understanding of the new culture. A new feeling of pleasure and sense of humor may be experienced and you start to feel a certain psychological balance and start to have a feeling of direction. As you become more familiar with the environment and you start to evaluate the old ways versus those of the new. As the process continues, we begin to realize that the new culture has good and bad things to offer.

For Adam fans, the first phase was when he appeared on American Idol and Toured. Of course, like any honeymoon, it couldn’t last. Now, we have moved on to the Negotiation phase. And eventually, many of us will move into the Adjustment and Acculturation phase.

Moving Beyond Culture Shock to Art

In January and February, 2000, PBS broadcast an four-part documentary series that explored cultural controversies in now-classic works of art – in literature, painting, film, and music – and examined the relevance of these masterpieces today.

“The series examines the scandal surrounding Manet's famous 1865 painting of a nude in The Shock of the Nude: Manet's Olympia; the "subversive nature" of 1920s jazz in The Devil's Music: 1920s Jazz; the Production Code era of Hollywood movies in Hollywood Censored: Movies, Morality & the Production Code; and the century-old conflicts surrounding Mark Twain's novel in Born to Trouble: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Individually and collectively, the films explore a host of important questions about the arts and society: Who decides what constitutes good art? Should the arts ever be censored? How do historical arts controversies fit into current debates about censorship? What does freedom of expression really mean in a democracy?”
Source: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/cultureshock/index_1.html

The series profiled moments that were “Flashpoints” – moments when art challenged conventions about race, politics, sex, gender, religion, violence or simply the unfamiliar in a meaningful and lasting way. Here are three cultural “Flashpoints” profiled in the series:

Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring [1913]

On May 29, 1913, in Paris, Les Ballets Russes staged the first ballet performance of The Rite of Spring (Le Sacré du Printemps,) with music by Igor Stravinsky and choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky. The intensely rhythmic score and primitive scenario -- a setting of scenes from pagan Russia -- shocked audiences more accustomed to the demure conventions of classical ballet. The complex music and violent dance steps depicting fertility rites first draw catcalls and whistles from the crowd, and was soon followed by shouts and fistfights in the aisles. The unrest in the audience escalated into a riot. The Paris police arrived by intermission, but they restore only limited order. Chaos reigned for the remainder of the performance. Nijinsky and Stravinsky are despondent. However, Sergei Diaghilev, the director of Les Ballets Russes, comments that the scandal was "just what I wanted."

The ballet completed its run of six performances amid controversy, but no further disruption. Both Stravinsky and Nijinsky continue to work, but neither creates pieces in this percussive and intense style again. In later years, The Rite of Spring became regarded as a path-breaking 20th century masterpiece. The work is often heard in concert and the ballet is set by many prominent choreographers. After extensive research, Nijinsky's original setting was reconstructed and presented by the Joffrey Ballet in 1988. This performance, 75 years after the premiere, caused no riots. In fact, it was televised nationally on PBS.

Early Jazz: “The Devil’s Music” [1900-1930]

Jazz emerged in New Orleans around the advent of the 20th century. Jazz blends elements from varied traditions, including African and African American, religious, brass band, and blues styles. The improvisational music that resulted with its distinct syncopated rhythm was originally preformed by African American s for African American audiences. Since African American performers are banned from performing at white clubs, New Orleans' Storyville, a notorious Red Light district that was home to the brothels and bars, provided the only venues for jazz.

In 1917, the U.S. Navy, fearing dissipation and violence among sailors, shut down Storyville, scattering jazz musicians to Mississippi riverboat bands and cities such as Memphis, Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City, where local styles evolved. In spite of the attempt to silence Jazz, its popularity grows, and it attracted a wider audience, so do campaigns to censor this "devil's music." Early detractors like Thomas Edison, inventor of the phonograph, ridiculed jazz, saying it sounds better played backwards. A Cincinnati home for expectant mothers wins an injunction to prevent construction of a neighboring theater where jazz will be played, convincing a court that the music is dangerous to fetuses. By the end of the 1920s, at least 60 communities across the nation enact laws prohibiting jazz in public dance halls.

In the following decades, jazz continued to evolve, attracting both black and white audiences. Public opposition to jazz faded as new generations embrace swing, big band, bebop, and later styles. Today, jazz is recognized as one of America's greatest contributions to music and is a subject of academic study and analysis.

Elvis Presley [1956]

By the spring of 1956, rock 'n' roll sensation Elvis Presley was rapidly becoming a national phenomenon. His first single for RCA records, "Heartbreak Hotel," was number one on the charts, and plans are in the works for his movie debut. Everywhere Presley performed, his sultry looks, swinging hips, and dynamic vocal style drove teenage listeners wild. His ability to perform music influenced by black rhythm and blues for a white audience brought this music to the growing postwar "Baby Boom" generation.

Presley had already appeared six times on national television, when he appeared on The Milton Berle Show on June 5, 1956, and triggered the first controversy of his career. Presley sang his latest single, "Hound Dog," with all the pelvis-shaking intensity his fans screamed for. Television critics across the country slammed the performance for its "appalling lack of musicality," for its "vulgarity" and "animalism." The Catholic Church took up the criticism in its weekly organ in a piece headlined "Beware Elvis Presley." Concerns about juvenile delinquency and the changing moral values of the young found a new target in the popular singer.

After Berle's show, Ed Sullivan, whose variety show is one of television's most popular, declared that he would never hire Presley. Steve Allen, who has already booked Presley for The Tonight Show, resisted pressure from NBC to cancel the performance, promising he would not allow the singer to offend. When Presley appeared on Allen's show in July, he good-naturedly agreed to spoof his image by dressing in white formal wear and singing "Hound Dog" to a basset hound. The show garners high ratings.

In August, Ed Sullivan reversed his decision and announces he has signed the young star to an unprecedented $50,000, three-show contract. During the first two appearances, although the camera sometimes pulls far back to show Presley's gyrations at an unthreatening distance, there is no effort to control what Presley does or sings. But for the final show, the CBS cameras reveal Presley only from the waist up, even during his performance of a gospel tune. At the end of the show, Sullivan makes it a point to put his arm around Presley and compliment him for being "a real decent, fine boy." Some historians believe the camera instructions may have been orchestrated by Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, in order to provoke publicity.
Presley's music, with its combination of both rhythm and blues and country influences, helped launch rock 'n' roll; his intense popularity among America's youth made him one of the first media superstars. By the time of his death 20 years later, Presley produced 90 record albums, charted 149 singles, including 18 at number one on the Billboard chart, acted in 31 films, and performed before countless fans. Presley may be the #1 selling recording artist of all time.

A Challenge but an Opportunity for Adam

Adam’s AMA performance has been analyzed by thousands, maybe even millions, of people, and I really think another opinion on this performance adds nothing to the almost deafening noise. And I also have no right or interest to recommend and artistic direction to Adam.

The AMA performance in itself was not a flashpoint but it started an international dialogue about the definition of art and challenged perceptions of sexuality. And now that he started this, I hope that Adam continue and “finishes” this conversation – and makes an artistic statement that becomes a real cultural flashpoint.

Adam has been given a unique opportunity to have an international platform. I do not want to see this moment pass and have this become just another “shock artist” performance – trivialized like the Madonna-Britney kiss as a PR stunt. I believe that this performance, and the reaction to it, can help Adam, his fans and even some of his detractors develop a better understanding of themselves and the world we live in. But I also hope that this performance finally frees Adam from some of the socio-political pressure he is under and, along with the good reviews his album received, may stimulate greater personal freedom and artistic creativity.

If a critic does not indicate a score, they assign a score based on the general impression given by the text of the review. Adam's FYE get a score of 67 which is great for any Idol alum. Of the recent major Idol alum releases, this is the second highest score:

70 Kelly Clarkson “All I Ever Wanted” [2009]
67 Adam Lambert “For You Entertainment” [2009]
61 David Cook “David Cook” [2008]

58 David Archuleta “David Archuleta” [2008]
55 Kris Allen “Kris Allen” [2009]
52 Carrie Underwood “Play On” [2009]

Here are the reviews and MetaCritic scores for FYE:

83 Entertainment Weekly
If For Your Entertainment's material sometimes wears him rather than vice versa, he's still the belle of what turns out to be one heck of a glitter-pop ball.

75 Los Angeles Times
For Your Entertainment is a polished affair, but stylistically, it shows Lambert running loose like a kid in a Comme des Garçons store.

70 Spin
Everyone from Lady Gaga to Muse chips in here with perhaps the strongest, most flavorful batch of tunes to reach an AI vet, and Lambert's polymorphous vocal skills unite dancefloor strut and hard-rock pomp in a convincing glam package.

70 Slant Magazine
Over the course of the album's 14 tracks, Lambert struts and vamps and brings a real sense of spectacle to his vocal performances.

63 Chicago Tribune
It’s a series of hedged bets. It stuffs Lambert into a box of formulas that keep his musical flamboyance in check.

60 Rolling Stone
The songs sound great but feel strangely stuffy--Entertainment seems like a disc that was overthought.

40 The New York Times
This is an overwrought, clunky, only sparingly entertaining record, constantly in argument with itself. Worse, 'For Your Entertainment' isn’t an ambitious flop, it’s a conservative one.

Nov. 23-29: A Fallen Idol & A Fallen J.Lo Get Back Up
Yahoo Music 11/27/09 4:01pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in That's Really Week

It takes some musicians years to stockpile enough anecdotes worthy of a Behind The Music rockumentary, but American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert just managed to do so record time, following a classic rise/fall/redemption story arc in just one week.

The saga began last Sunday at the American Music Awards, when Adam--an unknown less than a year ago, before he became the breakout star of American Idol season 8--was primed to be the breakout star of the awards telecast. It was supposed to be his big night, with his first televised performance of his new single "For Your Entertainment" closing the big show. It was a classic rock 'n' roll Cinderella story of overnight stardom.

But then, something went wrong. An "in the moment" Adam got "carried away" (his words) during his raunchy performance--which, in case you missed it, featured a same-sex smooch, dancers on leather leashes, a whole lot of R-rated groping, and one especially outrageous unrehearsed dancer-interaction. All of this left blindsided camera crew members scrambling to quick-cut to widescreen audience reaction shots and panicked staffers in the editing bay working overtime to cut out "offensive" scenes for the show's tape-delayed broadcasts. By the end of the whole spectacle, the live audience was sitting in semi-silent shock as Adam flipped the bird, and roughly 1,500 irate viewers flooded the ABC switchboard with complaints. It appeared that on the biggest night of his life, during his important make-or-break performance, Adam Lambert had blown it.

The fallout continued later in the week, when it was announced that Adam's free Wednesday concert on Good Morning America has been cancelled, reportedly because ABC--the same network that aired Adam's controversial AMAs performance--was skittish that he might pull the same stunts that landed ABC in hot water Sunday night. A rep for GMA told TV Newser: "Given his controversial live performance on the AMAs, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning."

But then, this whole tale had a rising-from-ashes happy ending. CBS rival morning program The Early Show promptly swooped up Adam for its Wednesday episode; the scandal only seemed to spike sales for Adam's debut album, For Your Entertainment, with him now predicted to sell an impressive 225,000 units in his first week; he delivered tamer Early Show and Letterman performances that were well-received by the public, establishing that it's not all about shock tactics with him; and he became a free-speech cause célèbre as he pointed out the double-standard that his performance had generated far more controversy than similarly racy displays by heterosexual female AMA performers.

So maybe he knew what he was doing all along. Regardless, it was one crazy week for Adam Lambert.

I love him! Such a strong writer.

btw, the little boy dancing to Master Plan? Looks like he's on the path to become another outrageous performer. Did he learn the crotch grab from Adam? Or Michael Jackson?

A few words from the super sexy Kermit.

Hollywood Star Responds to Adam Lambert's Critics

This frog has some dreams that he's makin come true.
This frog never will falter,
no, not through slush or fog.
This frog will not wear a halter,
Cause nothing halts this frog!
I made myself a promise
as a young green pollywog.
I'll be on top!
Nothing can stop this frog!
